Helping Korean Students Adjust

I had a great opportunity to help a community or an individual of my choosing through the help of our school CAS project. It took me a while to think about who to help and how to help them. Then I started thinking about how I performed in MYP 1 when I first joined MBIS. I remembered I had a lot of difficulties and I was always willing to get help from a senior in our school. This kind of gave me an idea of what I could to for my CAS project. I decided to use this opportunity to help Korean students who are not aware of IB expectations. There is a big difference with the Korean education system. At MBIS we have reports such as lab reports and essays in each of the subjects. My idea was to first talk to them about the IB learner profile and how it is used during lessons and how we should be using it in our daily life. Then we got into the details of grade boundaries for each subjects and the criteria. I was also able to give a few tips on how to get a better grade in each subject. I think this CAS project was effective since it directly helped students. I consistently talked with the students getting feedback on how the lessons went. By the help of their feedback, I could improve the lesson plan or make the next lesson more productive.

The students came to me even after the lessons were over and thanked me. They explained to me how the lessons I gave were useful for their adjustment to a new school and system of education. Thankfully, the time I have contributed and invested on this CAS project was worth it.

Demonstration of a DP CAS Project: A creative engagement of students in the IB Diploma Programme is the experiential Creativity, Activity, and/or Service learning project. This authentic project-based-learning experience is one that best shows the stages of investigation, collaboration, preparation, action and demonstration.I do not want this activity to end. It can help numerous Korean students in our school and it would be really useful for them. Helping people around us is always a blessing and it would be good for another Korean student to take up this project for the future.
