Mahindra International School Champions Community Clean-Up Drive Under Swachh Bharat Abhiyan 2.0

In alignment with the renewed vision of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan 2.0 and its core mission to nurture responsible global citizens, Mahindra International School (MIS) successfully led a vibrant Neighbourhood Clean-Up Drive around its Hinjawadi campus in Pune. The initiative brought together students, parents, educators, and community members in a powerful demonstration of collective responsibility towards a cleaner and healthier environment.

True to its belief that education extends far beyond classrooms and textbooks, MIS conceptualised the drive as a fully student-led initiative. Participants actively collected and segregated waste, gaining valuable, hands-on experience in sustainable practices, responsible waste management, and environmental stewardship. The activity empowered students to translate learning into meaningful action while fostering a strong sense of civic responsibility.

What began as a school-led effort soon evolved into a broader community collaboration. MIS partnered with neighbouring institutions—including Bliss International School, International Institute of Information Technology (I²IT), and Symbiosis International University—to create a unified platform for civic engagement. Volunteers worked side by side to rejuvenate public spaces, while reinforcing the importance of proper waste segregation and responsible disposal practices.

This collaborative initiative directly addressed Pune’s ongoing waste management challenges, illustrating how local, grassroots efforts can contribute to larger, city-wide sustainability goals. The drive stands as an inspiring example for educational institutions, demonstrating how proactive community engagement can lead to measurable environmental impact.

The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from over 250 volunteers from Mahindra International School, supported by 50 volunteers from I²IT, 20 from Symbiosis International University, and 10 from Bliss International School—a true testament to the strength of collective action and shared purpose.

As an IB World School serving a diverse and international community, MIS continues to embed the IB values of global citizenship, sustainability, and service learning into its everyday ethos. Initiatives such as the Neighbourhood Clean-Up Drive reaffirm the school’s commitment to nurturing socially conscious individuals who understand their role in building cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable communities.

This initiative also served as a powerful reminder to our children that individual actions matter, and that caring for the environment is a shared responsibility—aptly captured in the words of environmentalist Robert Swan:

The greatest threat to our planet is the belief that someone else will save it.”

The resounding success of this clean-up drive highlights how educational institutions can act as catalysts for positive social change when students, educators, and communities come together with a shared vision and unwavering commitment.
