“Our goal is an environment decency, quality and mutual respect for all human beings and all other living creatures. Our goal is a decent environment in its broadest and deepest sense” (Earth day Founder, U.S. Senator, and Wisconsin Governor, Gaylord Nelson)
United Nation celebrates International Mother Earth Day on the 22nd April every year. It is celebrated to remind each of us that the Earth and its ecosystems provide us with life and sustenance. It provides an opportunity to raise public awareness around the world to the challenges regarding the well-being of the planet and all the life it supports. The term Mother Earth is used because it “reflects the interdependence that exists among human beings, other living species and the planet we all inhabit”.
The UN’s Sustainable Goals are connected to the Earth day.
GOAL 6: Clean Water and Sanitation
GOAL 7: Affordable and Clean Energy
GOAL 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities
GOAL 12: Responsible Consumption and Production
GOAL 13: Climate Action
GOAL 14: Life Below Water
GOAL 15: Life on Land
What is my responsibility on this day, we need to empower everyone with the knowledge to inspire action in environment protection and climate literacy. The current pandemic of Corona Virus has harmed lives, livelihoods and economies.
We as a school community can do several activities to mark this day when we are in self isolation –
Read long books
Do 15-minute daily meditations and keep a gratitude journal
Dig into yoga – free classes here are 59 free classes on YouTube
Handwrite letters
Meditate
We share the single planet, drink from the same water and breathe the same air, so in this difficult time let’s connect as one family.
