This year, students focused on building glider models from recycled materials, applying prior experience with tools like cutters and glue guns while working in groups. The objective was to enhance conceptual understanding of both Design and Science subjects and ease their transition to the Middle Years Programme (MYP). Learners were introduced to key principles through a planner focused on the global context of “Scientific and Technical Innovation” during this project-based learning task. Overall, students successfully completed their gliders, reflected on their learning, and showed enthusiasm for the project.

Models built during the project-based learning:

Learners’ reflection:

Suhaana – MYP1B

Challenging: I think the most challenging thing was balancing the weight of the glider. We had to make sure that both sides weighed equally. When we tested the glider, the back was too heavy, so we added 2 coins to the front of our glider. We also had to make sure that the wings were equal, so cut/trimmed the parts that were too big.

Rewarding: I think the most rewarding part was testing our glider and finding out we did it well.

Ambar – MYP1A

Challenging: The bended wings, after testing the glider a few times my teammates informed me that the wings bend to solve it we injected hot glue into the wings so that it became stable.

Rewarding: I think it was the moment the glider was done because we felt very proud.
