My CAS project, as part of the Diploma programme, entailed my involvement in the 2021–2022 Student Council, wherein I was the office holder for social events. Commencing with online meetings, we soon transitioned to in-person meetings. Over the course of the year, we orchestrated a plethora of activities both online and offline, with the purpose of fostering student engagement, facilitating cross-cultural interactions, and promoting communal bonding. These events also served as a conduit for us to give back to society by tracking and addressing pertinent global issues of contemporary significance.
While working as the office holder, I developed attributes of team working, leadership, communication, and being open minded. One of our primary responsibilities as a team was to plan and execute fundraising events throughout the year. These events were critical in supporting various causes that were important to our community. Three of the major fundraisers we organized were for cancer awareness, pride month, and the Ukraine civil war.
The cancer awareness fundraiser was initiated when a member of our community was diagnosed with breast cancer. To raise funds for the cause, we solicited donations from students in all grade levels. In addition, we distributed pink ribbons and organized a field event to witness the head shaving of our teacher. To ensure that all funds were accounted for, I led the effort to track donations. We ultimately raised a substantial amount of money which was donated to the I-Share foundation, an NGO.
For the pride month carnival, which was the most successful event of the year, I was entrusted with the responsibility of managing the entire event. To do so, I worked closely with several groups and teachers to organize various activities, including the hosting of flags and setting up stalls throughout the school. Given the COVID-19 pandemic, ensuring that all protocols were strictly adhered to was of paramount importance. Despite the challenges, the meticulous planning and attention to detail helped ensure that the event was a resounding success and was thoroughly enjoyed by all participants.
The Ukraine fundraises consisted of a buyout idea, which we found about through our research. This meant that the students had to pay a sum of money to get out of class and attend the volleyball matches, while all the proceedings would go to the red cross. In my capacity as an organizer of these efforts, I was tasked with ensuring that all teachers and students were informed of this initiative via email correspondences and class announcements. Additionally, I collaborated closely with my colleagues to ensure that the volleyball field was set up to facilitate the smooth and successful execution of these fundraising matches.
Furthermore, we organized various other events like Valentine’s Day bake sale, Christmas secret santa, Easter day egg hunt, Indian republic day quizzes, and Halloween costume competitions.
Throughout the past year, I had the opportunity to participate in a rewarding experience that not only taught me valuable collaboration and leadership skills but also instilled in me a sense of personal growth. This experience would not have been possible without the contributions of my enthusiastic team, the support of my supervisor, Ms. Clinton, and the guidance of community members like Ms. Jodi.
As a member of the social events team, I am proud of our accomplishments in turning our ideas into successful events. Our hard work and dedication have led to some of the most memorable events in the school’s history. It is a testament to our team’s commitment to excellence and our ability to work together towards a common goal.
As the Student Council’s office holder for social activities in 2021–2022, I am thrilled to report that our consistent engagement has resulted in a resounding success for the CAS initiative. I am grateful for the opportunity to have been a part of this remarkable experience and look forward to applying the skills and knowledge I have gained to future endeavors.
