A Student’s Perspective: Entrepreneurship in a Global Context

Hridaan, an MYP5 student, took the GOA course Entrepreneurship in a Global Context and found it to be an engaging and transformative experience. The course not only provided an interactive way to explore entrepreneurship but also helped him develop social and communication skills through collaboration with students from different parts of the world.

“One of the initial challenges I faced was navigating a new learning platform, Canvas, which was different from ManageBac. However, I found a Google document that guided me step-by-step, helping me overcome this hurdle. Unlike in school, where we receive reminders for submissions, I had to self-regulate my deadlines. To stay on track, I ensured that 95% of my work was completed a day before submission, leaving only minor refinements for the deadline day.”

Hridaan also appreciated the mentorship of his teacher, Ms. Megan Frazier, who not only guided students in understanding the coursework but also introduced various discussion formats—written and verbal—allowing students to explore and develop different skills. The course provided a unique learning experience, particularly in understanding how to collaborate across time zones—an opportunity rarely encountered in traditional MYP classes.

Data Visualisation: A Deep Dive into Analytics and Ethics

Arjun, another MYP5 student, chose Data Visualisation, a course that explores how data is collected, represented, and analyzed. The course introduced him to Flourish, a digital tool that transforms complex data into visually appealing graphs, including bar charts, line graphs, and geographic visualizations.

“One of the most interesting aspects of this course was learning about the ethics and safety of data representation. It made me more critical of the data I see in daily life and more mindful of ensuring that visualizations are ethical and accurate.”

Despite facing challenges such as time zone differences in group projects and technical difficulties with platforms like Pronto and Canvas, Arjun found ways to adapt.

“To manage time zone challenges, I used a conversion tool that highlighted overlapping working hours for my group members, making collaboration smoother.”

Arjun spoke highly of his teacher, Mr. White, whose expertise and supportive approach made learning both effective and enjoyable. “Mr. White’s deep understanding of data visualisation, combined with his willingness to provide constructive feedback, made this course truly impactful.”
