Teaching English to Students from Vasant Dada Patil

My final CAS project was teaching English to students from the Vasant Dada Patil School on Wednesday afternoon. Vasant Dada Patil is a neighbouring Marathi school, which teaches students in the first to the eighth grade. Since the beginning of the year, three other MBIS students and I would meet weekly to either discuss lesson plans or conduct English classes.

Every other week we would get together and collaboratively plan next week’s lesson based on our observations from the previous class and keeping in mind our reflections on the strengths and weaknesses of our previous plans. During the classes we worked to incorporate activities which would motivate the students to learn English. We included interactive activities, in order to make learning fun for the students. People may learn the best when they enjoy and love what they are learning and I think this was the best approach to planning the class.

I really hope the classes will have a long-term impact on the students. I hope we taught the children something new with each activity. Irrespective of whether or not the learning was about English, I hope we taught skills which they can use outside of class, such as better cooperative skills. I also hope we strengthened the relationships between the students within the class. We had noticed there was a rather significant gender divide between the students. We tried to use games which require team work and cooperation in order to strengthen the relationships the students had with each other.

Demonstration of a DP CAS Project: A creative engagement of students in the IB Diploma Programme is the experiential Creativity, Activity, and/or Service learning project. This authentic project-based-learning experience is one that best shows the stages of investigation, collaboration, preparation, action and demonstration.
