Earth Day at MBIS

Earth Day was celebrated on the 22nd of April in an attempt to bring about awareness of our actions and their impacts on the planet. We often forget how much of an effect we have on the world around us, especially with the small things we do, which we disregard without any second thought. Earth Day itself is a day dedicated towards supporting the environment and its protection, and here at MBIS, we worked towards ensuring we could do the best of our abilities to do something new within our school community. To show our support towards the planet, everyone was dressed in shades of blue, green, and brown.

In the morning, we had an assembly with a guest speaker, Ms Sonali Rao, who discussed the grave issue of waste management, which should ideally start within each and every household. She talked about the five proper means of segregation, which should be considered important through all households that would enable less waste production. Her presentation seemed to be an eye-opener in terms of how much we as individuals could actually contribute towards waste reduction, and how we must start within ourselves. The main point she tried to convey was how the small things we say have no effect, like using plastic bags, or mixing wet and dry waste, can actually have such a huge impact on the environment around us.

Later on throughout the day, each homeroom was given a plant to be kept in the class. These plants are meant to be a part of each class and will be taken care of by the students of each homeroom. This was a great initiative in showing individual support, not just for a day, but also throughout the years to come. In the end, it’s not just about showing you care for one day but taking the same emotions forward in ensuring we do everything in our capacity to aid the one planet we’ve been given. Earth Day at MBIS, arranged by the Student Council, was a great success, and it was a way for students to carry forward the intention of working for a better and more sustainable future. Some of these future intentions are for example to have some recycling bins in the classroom, waste management in the cafeteria and composting as well as future environmental club.
